The right team can make your service business run like a well-oiled machine. But finding the right people may be a challenge. Here’s how to hire the perfect fit every time.

Hiring the right team members is a challenge for any business. If you don’t have the right people around you, it can severely limit your company’s performance and growth.

Maybe you can’t find enough talent to fill the vacancies on your team. Or maybe you have applicants but no one really “fits.”

Alternatively, if you’re new to the business, you may have difficulties starting your search.

Overcoming these challenges can allow a service business to build a stronger team. That stronger team, in turn, creates more opportunities for growth, which leads to more revenue and more profit.

But first, you have to get there… and it all starts with having the right team… otherwise, you’ll never be able to scale properly and maximise for profit.

This article can help you take that first step. Dive into the service business hiring secrets that can help you find the best candidates for your team.

Secret #1 – You Have to Love What You Do

First, you have to love what you do. If you don’t love what you do, it’s hard to attract other people who are going to love what they do.

Imagine talking to someone who hates their job.

Their tone, body language, and demeanor put out negative energy. They don’t want to be there or do what they’re doing, and it shows.

Now imagine that you’re looking for great people to hire for your team.

If you put out that kind of negative energy, quality people are going to stay away from you. If you want to attract people who love what they do, you have to be the beacon first.

Also, you need to love people.

If you don’t actually love people or being around them, you’re wearing a big sign that says, “Go away!”

It doesn’t exactly work when you want to hire the best people for your team, does it?

Secret #2 – Know When You Should Recruit (the Answer is Always)

You should always recruit when given the opportunity.

Let me throw out an example…

Let’s say you’re looking for someone to add to your team of CSRs.

So, I would approach people and say:

“If you know anybody who’s great with customers and great at sales? If you do, can you do me a favor and send them my way?”

Even if you already have people on staff in those departments, you should always be on the lookout for more talent.

Do we need those people?

Absolutely!

But we want to hire the best people for the team. Since we already have full-time people in those positions, it takes some of the urgency out of recruitment. And we have the time to find talent that fits.

Secret #3 – Dress to Impress

You want to attract really good people to hire for your team. But you dress like a slob.

What kind of people do you think you’ll attract if you dress like a slob?

You want really good craftsmen, but you’re probably going to attract sloppy craftsmen.

If you want to make a professional image, then you better portray a professional image. That’s what a customer wants coming to their house.

That’s what I would want.

Customers want to see “world-class” coming into their house. To a customer, it translates to world-class delivery.

But when you dress like a slob every day you aren’t portraying that professional “world-class” image.

And you aren’t attracting those kinds of people, either.

Secret #4 – Create Your Hiring Avatar

If you want to hire the right people, you need to create your hiring avatar.

When I say avatar, I mean the right person to do the right job.

But not only that…

You want the right fit, too. Otherwise, you end up with people who are there for the job but not necessarily for the team.

Are they a cultural fit?

Are they’re a fit for the team?

These are important questions to ask when you’re looking to hire someone new. A hiring avatar helps you pinpoint those qualities you’re looking for to do it.

But when you’re talking about an avatar, you can’t just think it in your mind. You have to write it on paper.

When you write out your hiring avatar, it’s not enough to say you’re looking for a plumber or a window guy. You need a cultural fit. So, you’re looking for someone who thinks like you.

Secret #5 – Decide to Step Up and Change Your Mindset

How often do you tell yourself, “there are no good people” out there?

Every time you repeat that mantra it gets hardwired into your mind. When you keep telling your brain the same thing, that becomes your truth and your reality. The way you think will never evolve.

And you’ll always see that “there are no good people” to hire because that’s what you tell yourself.

So, you need to make the decision to step up and change your mindset.

Secret #6 – Don’t Beg for Hires

One of the best-kept service business hiring secrets you’ll ever learn is that we don’t beg people to work for us. We don’t fight to get people in here.

At one point we were going to hire someone for our sales team. He was a hotshot salesman, but he came back to us wanting more money.

Our director said he wasn’t a fit.

Why?

People fight to work here because it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.

So, think about positioning when hiring for your team. You need people who want to work with you. If they don’t, it’s probably not a good fit.

The Takeaway

Some of the biggest hiring secrets for a service business have to do with you.

How do you perceive your work? The people around you? The world around you?

You attract what you put out there.

When you step up and change your mindset, you position yourself to find the best fit for your team. And not just someone to do the job.
