Do you feel that your workday is overloaded with stressful activities?

Probably you do (if you’re like most service business owners I’ve met). I felt that way once too.

Then I discovered this powerful strategy that changed everything for me: I call it “Mule’s Work Versus Warrior’s Work”.

All too often, business owners just do all the work that lands on their desk. However, not all of it needs to be done by you right now!

 

Do this simple exercise to know for sure:

Step 1. Make a list of everything you did yesterday, from the big picture stuff all the way down to the really frustrating little things like emptying garbage cans because someone forgot to do it.

Step 2. Now ask yourself: how much is an hour of your time worth? If someone were to hire you for an hour of consultation, what would you charge for that hour? $50? $100? $500? $1000?

Step 3. Look at the list you made in step 1 and identify everything where the work is valued at less than the value of your time. (Hint: emptying garbage cans is probably not worth your hourly fee!) That’s Mule’s work.

Step 4. Assign that “Mule’s work” to someone else. Do it right now. Go assign it to someone else and have them report to you when it’s done, and make sure they take it on as a regular assignment from now on.

Step 5. Chances are, a lot of the things you have been doing are below the level that you should be doing as an owner. If you’re like a lot of people who do this exercise, you may find that you have more available time now. (If you don’t, you probably aren’t valuing your time enough!) With this free time, switch it to Warrior’s work: which is the creative visionary work of an owner—vision-casting, planning, strategizing, and building your business.

This exercise seems so simple but it is amazingly profound and can free up your time and eliminate a ton of stress!
