Service Business Owners – Hire a Professional to Manage Social Media

I have found in working with HVAC, plumbing and electrical contractors, that they are often reluctant to spend money on outside vendors who can help them with marketing, PR, social media, and other activities. “I’m trying to make more money, not spend it!” they reason.

But if you want to know the secret to achieving market domination – here it is: you have to spend some money to make it. Still, you want to spend it wisely.

One wise way to spend your money is to outsource your social media management to a communications professional. I know, your business is your baby, and it’s hard to let anyone else care for it. You’re probably thinking that you know your business best, so you should be the one sharing specials and tips on Facebook, and interacting with customers.

Wrong. As a business owner, your focus should be on growing your business. That means studying marketing and sales techniques, finding the right employees, and bringing on the right vendors to help you achieve your goals. And I’m telling you, a social media manager should be one of those people. Managing it yourself just takes too much of your valuable time.

It doesn’t have to be an external company. If you’d like, you can hire someone to work for your company and manage social media. But if you do that, you need to select the right person. Your social media manager needs to understand your business, needs to understand the best times to post on social media, the best kinds of posts to make, and the best ways to interact with customers. It also needs to be someone with reputation management experience. If someone within your company has the time to devote to doing that effectively, then that’s great.

Remember though, there are plenty of social media consultants out there who are well worth the money. These people understand all the pieces of the social media puzzle and how to make them work for your business. You should select carefully if you decide to outsource – take the time to get to know the company, see what they’ve done for other businesses, especially those in your industry. Make sure they understand how social media can help and how to use it to its optimum potential.
