Go ahead, tell me, what business are you in? You're like, “Oh, customer service business, customer's that,” all right come on already. You read that in a book, hooray. You're wrong, and then some say, “No, I'm in the plumbing, I'm in the painting business, I'm in the delivering of quality business.” You're wrong. This statement, this thing that I'm going to tell you right now is going to be game and life changing, if you can eat the medicine. If you can swallow it, and if you're listening. You're in the business of marketing that's it. Dan Kennedy taught me that many years ago, which is probably why I got the advantage over a lot of people because I figured that out. Because here's what Dan says and I'm putting it in my own words, so it's probably not exactly what he said or how he said it, but I'm going to give you how I heard it and how it's helped me. Is that a deal? Cool, all right, let's keep going.
Without marketing and understanding, without bringing customers to us to give us money so we can deliver a service, what business do we have? If we just stood here as a mute, couldn't hear, couldn't see, couldn't do anything, and I just stood here, would anything happen? Would any business generate? No, there's no level of communication and most people are acting, when you say you're in the business of marketing they're like, “OH, yeah I know. I do postcards and TV and billboards.” No, I mean marketing is everything. Its what I say, right? Its how I say. Its every piece of everything in the puzzle that makes it.
First, not first, let me tell you why most people are in the position they're in. What do you have the most skill at doing? Go ahead, I know what you're good at right? Your technical ability, your sales ability, your painting ability, or your plumbing or your electrical ability, you're really good at it. That's what you did. So how much schooling, education, and knowledge do you have in marketing? That's right and if you think the greatest businesses out there, the ones in your area, that probably piss you off a little bit because they just keep getting bigger and better, how good are they at marketing?
Yeah, but the good news is this. In the same block there can be a Lowes and Home Depot. You can have many colossal large companies but you can't have many colossal companies where three big companies are great marketers and one is not because the one will never survive. That's why Bed Bath and Beyond succeeded Linen's and Things right? One direct mail, one great marketing tool used over and over put out a whole other business. so you're in the business of marketing. Now it sounds easy, “Well I'll just go learn marketing,” No, its not that easy because inside the marketing is your Brand awareness, and Brand penetration, and your Brand in general. Then that all gets real sticky in and out of everything we do in our business, but at least the first step today that you got, is that you got the answer. So the next time someone says, “Hey what business are you in?” You say, “I am in the business of marketing. That's the business I'm in.” Now that you know that, now you can find the solution to get the skills, the insight and all of that stuff to start solving what you need.
I will tell you that marketing is the number one thing that you need to know and every business is in the business of marketing. Its also the biggest problem because the fact that you don't know it and you make a lot of wrong decisions on what to do in marketing adds to pain which then pulls you back further. Then you do less and you're like, “I'm not going to market,” which then puts you back further and then at that point everyone is sitting there going, “Hey, I'm not doing no good,” and that puts you back further. You can't go back further. You've got to come a lot closer and you've got to be face to face with the marketing first. Once you become face to face with it and someone tells you exactly the pieces to do, how to do it, when to do it, where to do it, why to do it, what you should think about, what others are thinking about, how do you be completely different, what are the right pieces at the right time, you can see, if Grandma just keeps putting stuff in the sauce and the gravy and stirring it and never tells you what she's really doing, you'll make gravy or sauce, its just probably not going to be like Grandma's, but if someone tells you exactly what to taste it, what time, what ingredients to put in, what temperature, when to turn it down, how to think about it, you're going to be successful.
